Compás (rhythm) is the fundamental backbone of flamenco. To those who have studied Classical music, compás is the time signature or metre in music theory. However, the compás in flamenco is not mechanical and must be felt in order to portray the essence of the art. It is impossible to dance or to play the guitar without "feeling" the underlying compás. Without compás, the intricate communication in a performance between the elements of baile (dance), toque (guitar), and cante (song) will be lost.
